Mount Avoca produces the HORATIO wines in partnership with Mackereth House wines from local vineyards and honour the wonderful tradition of a true nineteenth century pioneer. The values and traditions of true handcraftedquality that brough fame to the Mackereth name 130 years ago are as important now as they were then.
Established in 1864 as "Hedon Farm" by Edwin Horatio Mackereth with the first vines planted in 1887, the Mackereth family operated vineyards and wine shops in Avoca until family tragedy and economic down-turn drove them out of business in 1929.
Re-established in 1999, the vineyard was replanted and Mackererth House Wines began making wine from local growers as well as the replanted vineyard.
Initially replanted by Matthew and Lisa Barry of Mount Avoca, the property is now owned by the Teal family. Mackereth's Hedon Farm is the original winery & vineyard planted in one of Australia’s most distinguished and distinctive wine regions – The Pyrenees.
After three years of painstaking work the Teal's have created a wonderful wine-bar in the original homestead as well as restoring the wonderful gardens. The building is a real slice of history and is open on weekends.
Open from noon Friday to Sunday call 0400 599 567 for more info or e-mail info@hedonfarm.com.au.
